Slint: A Whispering, Emotional and Mathematical Band.

Slint was a short-lived band which began in the late 1980's, with only two albums, Tweez (1989) and Spiderland (1991), both critically acclaimed.

So, how did a band with two well received albums end so abruptly?

Neither album sold particularly well, neither album charted, and this could be chalked up their unique style.

Slint exists in a unique genre known as Math Rock, an experimental genre which focuses on 'mathematical' rhythmic structures, that are often in irregular time signatures.

That means the music made is horribly unfit for radio, but that is certainly not because it lacks quality

This not only makes for haunting guitar cuts like the main riff of Good Morning, Captain, but also a more progressive, other-worldly sound in general.

And with these different structures allow for more experimentation in the vocal department, which is also incredibly unique in the genre.

Math rock places the focus on the instrumental music much more than the vocals.

The singer is normally the softest howl in the musical pack, and whispered vocals are a common occurrence.

However, it is not always silence, because as the whispered vocals pull you into the depth of the story being told by the lyrics, but eventually loudly sung or even shouted vocals come at the climax, washing the listener in a wave of intense awe.

This is used to great effect by Slint, especially in the song Breadcrumb Trail.

A unique band all and all, Slint is one that I would recommend you check out, especially if you are interested in the complexities of single songs.
